Last month I mentioned that I did another fun shoot with Marianne Williams for Dapper Cadaver. She's so much fun to work with and BJ's props and fx work is SO COOL. I feel so lucky to be able to play with them. :D Here are a couple of pictures!

I also did a shoot with one of my favorite friends Elody. We almost got arrested (apparently they don't need to post trespassing signs anymore...cool!) but it was fun.

So far, 2012 is off to a great start. There have been great years, but over the past year the awesome things in my life have not only somehow gotten better, but even the annoying stuff that used to hang over me has become irrelevant and past-ly which enables me to enjoy all this awesome stuff even more.

Looking at the start of 2011, I was just starting Identity Thief and my art blew. I'm ashamed to re-post that crap so you can go look in the blog annals if you really want proof. I've learned enough in the past 12 months though to finally trust that I'll keep getting better so I've stopped beating myself up over shitty work that I do. I just know its a step to better work! And now I'm painting the very last pages of Identity Thief. Yay!

Mid 2011 things got suddenly excellent. I moved into the monster lair sold a bunch of prosthetics and finally had everything I'd ever wanted. I almost feel guilty that I've gotten to have my cake and eat it too. But why the hell shouldn't I have cake?!

The rest of the year was full of classic Rob and Meg moments and non-stop winning. (We're allergic to losing.) Somewhere in there was a robmeg renaissance and our wondertwin powers got even stronger. Its like all the fun and happy stuff I had in my own life was in a head on collision with someone else's and now its twice as fun and happy.

Enough wordarrhea.

This weekend we went to the LA Comic Con.

Leland went too.

Me and Robert spent our time drawing pictures while Leland surreptitiously farted from his hidden crate under the table.

There were some people who wanted to buy these, but sadly Rob and me were off exploring.

Had a fun shoot with Marianne Williams for the Dapper Cadaver catalog yesterday.Dapper Cadaver has amazing props and even more great stuff coming out this year! Our last shoot was fun too. Turns out I'm Miss Dapper October in the 2012 Calendar! This calendar is awesome. Tons of really cool photos with great Dapper Cadaver props!

And suddenly its Robmas. That merry time of year when Rob gets ~~older~~ more distinguished and I get to finally get someone to celebrate the Christmas season with.

We get a tree every year and I'm pretty sure it gets more awesome each year. Though somehow the chocolate in our advent calendars never seems to improve... But picking out a tree in the rain and decorating it while listening to Elvis pretty much makes the perfect start to the season every year.

This year, the christmas miracles started early. I had a small Meagsgiving viking skating party at World on Wheels where I was treated to the most amazing viking cake ever by my friend Alyssa (cleverlittlecat.com). Hire her for your baking needs. You won't be disappointed!

And just when I thought it was all over, Rob and my awesome friends conspired to surprise me with a birthday trip to DISNEYLAND. I had no idea. no clue at all until they took the blindfold off and it was the best day ever. And 2011 really did end up being one of the best years ever.

Best gift you'll ever find and you don't have to stand in any lines for it.

Something Animal is a comic written by Sam Rhodes and Bryant Dillon of Fanboy Comics (at the time, they were still Openly Lewd Comics). They found Robert Burrows (www.nocuddletime.com) early last year and entrusted him with their literary baby not yet realizing that in his hands, this baby would become an adonis. As Rob's amazing talent unfolded page by page, it became clear that this was going to be kind of a big deal. Eventually this baby, grew into one hell of a 90 page graphic novel. Screw metaphors. Its amazing.

Its been a truly wonderful experience watching this project emerge as the beautiful book that it is. An enormous congratulations to Robert Burrows, Bryant Dillon, Sam Rhodes and the rest of the Fanboy comics crew on the release of Something Animal.

This is the month where I get even older! Thankfully, my cute-animal-calendar has a baby chimp on it to lessen the blow.

But first, lets back up.

Last month was crazy but somehow I managed to get everything done and even still have an epic Halloween. I hope that by Halloween next year it will be even crazier still! Being so busy, I got really backed up with my files and this here blog. So a bit of an update is due.

First, Ash Costello of the band New Years Day stopped by the shop to get some Gartered Legs for her 50+ show tour so she could be sure she was in the finest of gore couture.

I am unsure if she even took a breath between learning how to use her new prosthetics and hopping on the bus but she's been going non-stop since that night and Gartered Legs have been on dozens of stages by now.

A snapshot of recent progress...

October means a very busy and very happy Meaghan. There are baby pandas on my calendar, haunted attractions to see, pumpkins to carve and lots and lots of OpenWound FX to be made.

Identity Thief is going well apparently. I had arrived at a frustrating stand-still between equipment problems and ink running low but I think this weekend I set myself right back on track. Maybe I'm just anxious about this being my favorite part of the story...and the most fun to draw.

A huge thanks to my most talented and beautiful models, makeup and hair artist and my beloved photographer for a very successful photoshoot of the OpenWound FX Gartered Legs this Wednesday! It was a long night but they were all real troopers and my girls remained beautiful, energetic and fresh faced til the very end!

Here's a quick preview of the gorgeous Merissa Segedi and Sharifah Williams after Sharifah's shoot. She'd already gotten a head start on removing the FX but I managed to catch them both for a quick snapshot of the makeup and hair that Merissa did so well.

A long sunny morning at the Rose bowl flea market (thankfully I had a hat so Rob didn't have to give me his!) where I found motocross boots and then right into an afternoon of kayaking:

Then we found ourselves driving right past World on Wheels with an hour to spare before heading to the Tim Burton exhibit. We didn't have our skates so we braved the quads. Lucky for us, the quads are way easier than inlines so we were speeding around at our usual plaid speed. I still prefer the inlines for sports though.

Jessica Walker of Porcelain Poet Photography and I have wanted to shoot together for probably about the last 3 years or so, so we were thrilled to finally get the chance when she visited LA this summer!

Jessica Walker is an amazing photographer from Seattle, Washington. I've been a huge fan of her work for a long time and saved one of my favorite FX for a shoot with her. We got along great and I can't wait to get up to Seattle for another shoot with her in her studio! Her book, "Alice in Wonderland" is available here. I knew Jessica's work would be wonderful but I am still in awe of her photography. For this shoot I did Gartered Legs cast in silicone which I hope to have available soon for retail sale in a latex version. I specifically request that my special fx work not be touched up digitally so what you see is real hand-made prosthetics. I will post a close up of the prosthetics asap. For now I've got to get a bit of Identity Thief labor done in honor of labor day!

When California announced with only one day of warning that we would now be paying tax for Amazon.com and other such sites, I made a small wish-list binge.

Its been a great week for packages at the Monster Lair. And it doesn't stop there, tomorrow I pick up my clothes from the Lip Service shoot.

Sometimes catching up on things really pays off.

Got through page 23(above) and got myself a head start on page 24.

Now another weekend of hard work lies ahead of me.

I was in dire need of some quality down time with myself, Leland and Rob. So I got a good fill of it over the long weekend. I kickstarted the next 10 pages of Identity Theif, was treated to some of the best food in the valley and drank lots and lots of iced green tea.

I've got all the elements for page 21 here but I'm positive I'll be hacking it into obscurity and...abstractity. For now its going to stay put while I stay on track.

22 happens to be a favorite/lucky number of mine. This page went pretty smoothly and I'm less aggravated about it than I am most of the pages. Lucky indeed!

I'm grateful its a 4 day week and I'm spoiling for another fabulous summer weekend.

I had a fine FX-y afternoon and I'm home a bit early today. Not a terrible start to the long weekend. I'm looking forward to starting(finishing?) page 21 today and enjoying a pleasant documentary about ancient aliens or castle defense systems or toddlers and tiaras.

Turns out I have to download new drivers before my camera will cooperate with this computer. Once I get those two on speaking terms, I will finally be free of these awful pixelated ipod photos. But pixelated as it may be, here is most of page 20. ..in pieces...and some delicious/cute ladybug chocolates from my mother visiting from Germany. (I see you 'mirin')

I could pretend I'm right on schedule but then I'd be lying.

I'm still within my completion date goal though so although I'm annoyed at not being as far as I'd like to be, I've had a few rough months and things are finally back on track .Pages 21-24 are on their way. I have a feeling I keep saying this?

Slowly hacking away at all the June-y business. I'm planning on a more focused autumn and really hammering out IDT.

First order of business is getting all the new OpenWound FX photos online. I'm making my way through them as fast as I can. Rob's been taking excellent photos of the products as they ship out. I'm ever grateful to have such a skilled photographer at hand...

This weekend I'll be shooting some OpenWound FX Couture Prosthetics with Jessica Walker of Porcelain Poet Photography. I'm excited to finally shoot with her after years of admiring her work. I'm also glad to finally these prosthetics before tucking away into fall and all my 2012 preparations.

Ugh and its another late night for me!

I should note here that for some reason, blogger and mac are not getting along. Honestly Google.

where did I put my camera?

The studio is small but hungry for cameras and other forgotten gear. So for now, I guess we will have low res ipod photos. Its not that I haven't looked for the camera, but more that I've instead invested my time in making hands and laying out pages 20-23 of Identity Thief. And all the usual settling in that comes with a big move. These hands will be done tomorrow and up in the shop by the end of the week.

Delay? None here. Sure I said it would all be up before June but who knew moving could take so much time? As it turns out, there is a piling up of to-do's on the list of to get done when you don't have access to the internet. So there are photos to edit, hands to finish, and pictures to upload. So for now, there's a lot of...text.

I has it.

and I've got a ton of updating to do...

It's been one hell of a spring between finishing up The Living Dead, fixing my computer situation (no more low res ipod posts!) and moving the Monster Lair all while keeping the Identity Thief plate spinning and OpenWound FX fans waiting, but I've once again got the world at my fingertips and my balls in the Time Warner vice so its onward ho.

NEWSFLASH

I'm hearing murmers of an official Living Dead release very soon... I for one can't wait to see it. I'm predicting a 90%+ score on Rotten Tomatoes...

Identity Thief went a bit more slowly the past month or so with the movie and the move but I've been plugging away every day even if its just a little bit at a time. I'm actually not as behind as I had expected to be. I'll be scanning those in and posting them soon. There are also rumors that Something Animal is in it's final stages....

I'm currently in the process of getting all the nice OpenWound FX photos Rob's been taking for me while I have been without a computer. So those will go up in the store this week. In the meantime, here's a fun preview of my work for The Living Dead:

Last weekend of shooting. This weekend I aka OpenWound FX will be supplying silicone prosthetics and a bit of gore for the final grizzly scenes.

New notebooks are exciting uncharted territory.
Though also bittersweet.
I always wonder where I'll be when I fill the last empty space.

I still prefer the privacy and personality of hand written word among streamofconsciousness art. No formatting no cache no font. Everything just feels trite in type.

FX time.

P.S. How is it that every time I open a new book, a new fx job comes up? Very suspicious indeed.

I hate that nobody goes to libraries anymore. Their absence just makes more hassle for me. If these places were more crowded, they might just be forced to hire expedient employees and maybe, just maybe I'd be in and out in a reasonable amount of time. While I appreciate the congenial down home service, I don't appreciate all the unnecessary dilly dallying. Nevertheless, taxes are done and so is one panel of page 17.

Also today I've put the shop on hiatus until May. With the movie shooting every weekend, I won't have time to give owfx orders the attention they need. Hopefully I'll have a new computer by then too so I'll be able to outfit the shop with all the photos rob's been so kind to take for me.

Now to prep for a very undead weekend....

That's right. I'm a thespian.

Spent the morning in orange county reading for the zombie short I'll be acting in next month. My co-stars and the directors are really cool. I have a feeling the shoot is going to be really fun. I'll definitely be posting more news about this as it comes.

Then we raced home and I finished page 14.

I really hope I can make that last panel look more like the view from the inside of a toilet though. Next up, page 15&16. Possibly both at the same time.

This should be done by tomorrow. I hope! Truthfully though, so far, I'm right on schedule. But I have to keep cracking the whip lest I fall behind and this takes two years 0.0

Too much overtime has made me anxious and agitated. I'm not made for jobs. Plus the impending carpal tunnel. I have to keep a sketchbook and planner next to me at all times just so I don't totally lose it. Thankfully though, I have very rewarding hobbies.

In FX news, one of my customers is using her silicone OpenWound FX hand as a working prosthetic. Nice!

Got something new and exciting coming up next month. Plus I just got news of a visit soon from an awesome friend! Good things are on the way.

Really raise the bar on how little I can do in a day and still feel normal/sane. The higher the highs the lower the lows. But I've got some serious deadlines to help pace this comic so this only means I'm more sure to meet them.
Worked a bit of overtime, got an order of severed fingers made and got more than just a start on page 14. I even went to trader joes. Now for some tikka masala and a movie.

Meanwhile I've been working hard to get page 13 and 14 done so that I can still have hope of reaching 20 by the 30th. -__-

A bit of a computer crisis at the moment so for now I'm just powering through the artwork without stopping to lay it out in photoshop which makes a remarkable difference in my momentum. May really help in the long run. regardless, I'm facing the difficult task of timing my apple investment which sucks because the longer I hold out, the more likely it is that I'll pay full price for something that is the 'old model' a month later. It's an invigorating gamble!

Who the hell wants to read about computer problems though. I dont have a photo of today's work though so check out my freaky arm! Not sure yet what happened. :/

I'm going to make it to page 15 by the end of the month afterall...this isn't to say I don't still hold out hope (as always) but. Page 12 is a bit larger format and has taken longer than I'd hoped.
Posting more often allows me to show my daily progress but also shows the limit of my speed.

In the spirit of sharing my daily artings, today is mostly sketches but one is the newest Identity Thief panel. Doesn't look like much but welcome to my post six-day-work-week Monday.

We spent some time in the comic store on saturday but I didn't find much. A whole lot of gradient fill and painter. Maybe I'll have to do an amazon order.
Rob said it best but I have to add that it is disheartening seeing how much digital art is taking place of manual illustration. I love being able to use photoshop to add more dimension and mood to my art, but it really is a shame seeing how much it is being used to shortcut the long, often frustrating process of putting permanent marks on paper by relying on the convenient support of ctrl+z. The most irritating are those who use photos and computers exclusively and compare what they do to manual illustration/art. I wont say if they are equal skills, but they are definitley separate.

Back to the Freakonomics movie....its pretttty good. pretteeeh

I have a monotonous, spirit crushingly boring job. I have this job every day though so there should really be no surprises, no peaks or valleys in how unstimulated I feel any time I am there. To be fair, it does sometimes challenge my patience, but somehow today was:

the most boring day ever.

I could blame it on the rain. Being stuck inside, my experience as dry as my hair. Soaked only in the boredom washing over me.
Or maybe it was exhaustion still clinging to me after a psychopathic all-nighter performed by my neighbor only feet from my pillow. Or the disappointment of realizing in the morning that the last act had indeed not been her gasping through strangling fists for her final vile breath.

I spent the day scribbling words images thoughts as my mind wandered any place the order count couldn't find me.

In my car my lunch break yielded a more satisfying version of page 12 but I spent the rest of the day wishing i could be here on the couch and maybe even watching a movie.

My customers are awesome.

I wake up an extra 10-15 minutes early every morning just so I can realize the daily fantasy of going "back to bed." once me and Leland have completed our pre-work duties, we crawl back in and pretend we don't have to go anywhere after all. This becomes an increasingly difficult indulgence to recover from the colder and darker the mornings are.
Today I forgot all my art supplies. Luckily there was a crumpled up piece of paper in the back seat.

I was supposed to be relaxing.

Instead I did some layout work for the comic.
I had spent a bit of time last week re-doing page 8 into a two page thing because a) I hated it and b) sometimes you really just have to spread out. Now I have to figure out how to get my favorite parts of the original back into action here...hrrrmmm

Also, I hate the post office for a lot of very fair reasons. But the fingers are sent out today and I'm feeling the glow of another job well done. Unfortunately, I'm also feeling the result of a gloveless afternoon covered in NAPHTHA.
